Muladhara – The Root Chakra
The Muladhara Chakra (Sanskrit: मूलाधार, “root support”) is considered the first of the seven main chakras. It is located at the base of the spine, in the area of the pelvic floor. Associated with the color red, Muladhara forms the foundation of the entire chakra system.
Its core theme is grounding and survival. It relates to primal trust, physical stability, security, and the ability to be rooted in the present moment. When the Root Chakra is balanced, we feel connected to the earth, calm, empowered, and trusting in the flow of life.
When out of balance, Muladhara may manifest as fear, insecurity, or restlessness. Physically, it is traditionally associated with the legs, feet, bones, and the lower intestinal region.
Practices to strengthen the Root Chakra include grounding yoga poses (such as standing asanas), Pranayama for calming, meditations focused on stability, and conscious time spent in nature. Working with the color red, drum rhythms, or chanting the mantra “LAM” are also considered beneficial.
Muladhara provides the base for all higher chakras. Only when this root is strong and nourished can creativity, love, and spiritual awakening unfold freely.
