Calamus
Calamus, Kalmus, Acorus, Acoro, Acorus calamus, Vacha (वाचा)
Calamus (Acorus calamus), known as Vacha in Ayurveda, is a highly aromatic rhizome traditionally used to sharpen the intellect, improve clarity of speech, and support concentration. It is considered a powerful herb for the nervous system and is often used in formulations for memory and cognition. Vacha’s pungent and bitter qualities help clear Kapha from the head and respiratory tract, making it valuable in cases of congestion and sluggishness. It also stimulates digestion, improves circulation, and awakens the senses. Because of its potency, it is typically used in small amounts, often as a powder mixed with honey or ghee.

In small amounts can support clarity and circulation, but excessive use may aggravate Vata due to its sharp and drying nature.

Its heating and sharp qualities may increase Pitta when overused; moderate use can aid focus and digestion without causing imbalance.

Strongly reduces Kapha, clears mucus and heaviness from the head and chest, and revitalizes sluggish digestion.
